Wine, hiking, Shakespeare--explore the Rogue Valley from our woodland retreat!
Ashland is a popular destination, with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and great dining and arts. There are dozens of wineries around. In 2016 Ashland was named one of the top 10 wine travel destinations by Wine Enthusiast. Crater Lake is a great day trip when it is open (it's snowed in in the winter). We have lots of hiking, including part of the Pacific Crest Trail which passes through east of Ashland. There are beautiful rivers and lakes to explore as well. The climate here is very Northern Californian--arid summers and mild winters with occasional snow. If you're flying in we'd be happy to pick you up at the airport and let you use our car during your stay.
Our 80-acre secluded homestead is located on a ridge between the Applegate and Rogue Valleys about 10 minutes from historic Jacksonville and 25 minutes from Ashland and Medford. We're on the I-5 corridor halfway between Portland and Sacremento. The coast is a 2.5 hour drive away. Our home was built with living-gently in mind. We have a wall of windows facing south into our woodland of oaks, madrone, pines, etc. Wooded ridges surround our home which is located in a low point of a draw. We have hiking trails through our property which connect a seasonal creek and its ponds and many woodland views.
A short way up a hill from our house, we also have a tiny house with porch which looks down upon a beautiful view of Mt. McLoughlin and the Rogue Valley. It’s a sweet place to retreat to for some earth and sky gazing.
Our house has a woody home-made feel. Jane is a ceramic artist and much of her work is displayed around the house or used to eat on. We have lots of books. The rooms are large, but there are not many of them: a great room which includes the kitchen, dining area, living room, and study; 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, and pantry. A greenhouse room is also attached to the house. Our home has internet, but no cable or TV.
We have a couple of sweet dogs and a couple of affectionate cats. We also have a few fish in a small fresh-water tank and 3 chickens down in our garden coop.
Our dogs are house dogs; we do not let them run free. Bodhi is a 14 year old Austrailian Shepherd, Kami is a 8 month old lab mix who we adopted after the passing this summer of Bodhi's long time companion Pandora. We take them out for a walk and/or let them play in a fenced area by our shop 3 times a day, but if it can't happen occassionally that's okay.
Our cats Myrtle and Rusty get fed twice a day but eat whenever they want. We sometimes let them in or out through the front door, even though they have a cat door that goes through the garage.
Our 3 chickens get fed in the morning, fill the feed containers with a little bit of oyster shell mixed in. Harvest the eggs daily or every other day. Check the water and fill as needed. This takes about 10 minutes.
The fish get fish food each morning. The water in the tank is ph adjusted, so please don't add water or clean the tank.
Our greenhouse will need watering (10 min), as well as the house plants (15 min, 1x week). |
